 Decorative, romantic, exotic yet practical, fans are a true hybrid of many cultures: the bamboo, paper or textile craft originated in China, then Japanese, Chinese and Korean and other Asian artists put their creativity onto this daily object. The folding fan design was invented by Korean artisans. When such design entered Europe, it caused a sensation among aristocrats.  French, British, Russian and more European artists put their own twist on both the engineering and the aesthetics.  Among them, flamingo dancers used fan as a major prop.

G P & J Baker created Batik Fans to capture the beauty of human and nature’s creation. Swallows, goose in marshland and  chrysanthemum blossoms, all printed with strong lines onto very heavy linen.  Please see the gilded lines to assemble the gold glaze on expensive fans.
