Madurai is ancient city and cultural center in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
Located on the river Vaigai bank, the temple town is famous for high quality textiles and harvests of jasmine flowers. Madurai means “sweetness” in Tamil. As early as the 3rd century BC, Greek Ambassador Megasthanes visited Madurai. Later many people from Rome and Greece visited Madurai and established trade with the Pandya kingadurai.
This embroidered cotton truly captures the beauty and history of the city. The printed cotton reflects the advanced printing technique of Tamil craft. Skillful using only 4 screens, it created 4 distinctive patterns. The stripes, in varied width, represent the Vaigai river, while the famous flowers are embroidered onto the cloth.
At almost 1lb/yard, this cotton is substantial and durable. In Madurai you can see the influence of Indian textile on UK’s design industry.
