"Fossil" is referring to the shape/pattern being similar to both fern leaves and trilobites.

Fern is still thriving on Earth and the trilobite has long extincted.

Background or the base cloth is an unbleached natural color. Not white or cream. The textile artist chose the perfect color, texture and weight for the base cloth.
